Job Title: Air Conditioning Multi‑Skilled Engineer

Location: Croydon 

Purpose of the Role
The Air Conditioning Engineer is responsible for maintaining all environmental and cooling systems across the site, ensuring building conditions remain stable at all times. The role includes Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM), reactive repairs, and breakdown response for all refrigeration and air conditioning (RAC) plant. The engineer must be technically competent across a wide range of A/C systems including chillers, CRAC units, VRV/VRF systems, split units, FCUs and AHUs. The position plays a critical part in maintaining plant availability, system reliability, and statutory compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out maintenance and repairs across all RAC units on multiple sites within agreed timeframes.
  • Attend reactive callouts as required and complete fault diagnosis to ensure minimal downtime.
  • Undertake proactive maintenance identified across the contract.
  • Ensure full compliance with Health & Safety procedures and report any breaches.
  • Complete routine PPM tasks in accordance with asset lists, schedules, and statutory requirements.
  • Highlight areas where improvements can be made and ensure reactive tasks are completed efficiently.
  • Maintain accurate logbooks, F‑Gas registers, and compliance documentation.
  • Ensure adequate spare parts are available and provide parts lists and timescales for remedial works.
  • Work overtime when required to support contractual needs.
  • Ensure all paperwork for PPM, reactive and breakdown works is completed and submitted promptly.
  • Use dynamic risk assessments for all work activities to ensure safe working practices.
  • Build positive working relationships with BGIS colleagues, subcontractors, and client representatives.
  • Maintain a safe working environment, including correct PPE and uniform use.
  • Uphold a professional image of BGIS at all times.
  • Undertake lone working where required following appropriate training.
  • Ensure assigned tasks are completed safely and in line with H&S requirements.
  • Maintain awareness and compliance with contractual KPIs and SLAs.
  • Participate in the out‑of‑hours call‑out rota.
  • Support the engineering team in producing near-miss reports, dynamic risk assessments, and accurate site records.
  • Ensure all company-issued tools and specialist meters meet compliance and certification standards.
  • Provide accurate estimates of time and materials for quotations when requested.
  • Read and understand risk assessments and method statements (RAMS) prior to starting work.
  • Carry out any additional duties as directed by the division management team.

Accountabilities

  • Reports to the Operations Manager and is accountable to the Division Management Team.
  • No direct line management responsibilities.
  • No direct budget responsibility.

Essential Requirements

  • NVQ or City & Guilds Level 2 in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (Level 3 preferred).
  • Fully qualified F‑Gas Engineer (C&G 2079 Category 1).
  • Formally trained in Refrigeration, A/C, Mechanical or Electrical discipline.
  • Strong experience fault‑finding, maintaining and repairing A/C systems including chillers, CRAC units, VRV/VRF, DX and split units, FCUs and AHUs.
  • Ability to read technical information, interpret alarms, and use diagnostic tools.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong customer service skills and a professional approach.
  • Able to work under pressure and make sound technical decisions.
  • Physically fit and able to handle tools and components up to 20kg.
  • Able to work at height and use ladders or vertical access equipment.
  • Team player with the ability to work effectively with BGIS colleagues and client representatives.
  • Flexible and willing to provide sickness/holiday cover at short notice.

Desirable Requirements

  • BMS knowledge or experience.
  • Multi‑skilled capability in additional disciplines (mechanical, electrical, fabric).
  • Experience within a commercial facilities or critical environment.
